Ralf Rangnick says Anthony Martial was absent at Aston Villa after telling the interim supervisor he didn’t need to be within the Manchester United squad.
Bruno Fernandes’ brace put the guests heading in the right direction for victory at Villa Park just for Jacob Ramsey to drag one again and substitute Phillipe Coutinho to seal a 2-2 draw.
United had two goalkeepers amongst their eight substitutes – one wanting the quantity allowed – and Rangnick mentioned he needed Martial to fill that spot.

However the German says the 26-year-old didn’t need to journey to Birmingham as he pushes for a January exit.
“Sure, he didn’t need to be within the squad,” Rangnick mentioned.
“He would have been within the squad usually however he didn’t need to and that’s the rationale why he was not travelling with us yesterday.”
