A Royal Navy warship was hit by a Russian submarine whereas on patrol within the North Atlantic Ocean.
HMS Northumberland had been trying to find the submarine after it disappeared from the ship’s radar within the Arctic Circle shortly earlier than the incident occurred.
The submarine hit the warship’s sonar – a bit of apparatus being towed tons of of metres behind it, which was fitted with delicate hydrophones for listening below water.
The incident, which occurred in late 2020, was captured by a documentary crew from Channel 5 who had been filming a tv sequence known as Warship: Life At Sea.
The Ministry of Defence has since confirmed the collision between the submarine and the warship, with a UK defence power supply telling the BBC that it was not thought to have been deliberate.
The collision reportedly precipitated harm to HMS Northumberland’s sonar, with the ship returning to a port in Scotland to switch the broken tools.
The MoD which doesn’t normally touch upon operations, was pressured to take action on this event as a result of the incident was caught on digicam.
A spokesman stated: “In late 2020 a Russian submarine being tracked by HMS Northumberland got here into contact together with her towed array sonar.
“The Royal Navy frequently tracks overseas ships and submarines in an effort to make sure the defence of the UK.”
